A note:
 
A customer/owner replacing the primary suspension bolts and nuts with Pip
pins is an example.   I think he actually got FAA approval on a 337!
 
(The bolt appeared to the idiot as in shear, but was often loaded in
tension.)

.  The concept of anybody modifying an existing work without having the
benefit of the full foundation is abhorrent to me and I think very
dangerous.  That is why revisions are so hard  for even the designer to get
FAA approved.
