  That's a very good question, it seems to me ( I could be wrong ) 
that this depends on how many horizontal panels each gore is comprised of. If 
you have enough horizontal seams, these tend to act as almost horizontal load 
tapes ( 4 layers of fabric in the feld seam ). I think these seams also act as 
additional safety factor, as in if there is ever a tare, all these seams stop 
tares. It also helps your load tapes, when sewn over these seams, in being 
something more substantial to sew to. As opposed to only a single layer of 
fabric down the entire gore.
           
       Just something more to think
