[Balloon-makers] Basket materials

For a wicker basket, I prefer marine plywood - we used 3/4 marine mahogany
for a 3 x 4 basket. I used maple for skids but changed to red oak later.
(The base for the U.S. Nationals Trophy is therefore red oak.)

For a Kydex basket I used 1 1/2 inch rattan for skids split in half imbedded
in formed grooves and 1/4 plywood inside above spacers and Styrofoam foamed
in place under that floor. I am very satisfied with it.

Any thoughts on the best material for a basket bottom and skids?

There are a lot of types of plywood out there. There are also stress grades:

...and they all weigh different.

Oak would work for skids. Some kind of high-density plastic for the bottom.
