Paul,
Check out marine grade ply. It is multiple ply and waterproof with nil voids
. The edges can be finished with a coat of epoxy. Sheet plastic, while it
has good shock resistance has little strength in sheet unless thick. Best
would be a fiberglass composite panel if that is the direction you want to
go. Oak or ash are fine skid materials but heavy. Poplar or pine work if
they are made to be easy replaced as they wear quickly. The UHMW plastic
work good as skids being both slick and smooth. Rod and sheet can be ordered
and can be worked with wood tools.
