[Balloon-makers] Singer sewing machine question

Ok, I've gotten a new (to me) sewing machine. A singer 112W116.

On the right side of the machine, there is not enough room between the
top of the bobbin holding assembly, and the metal plate that slides
over it. The thread can't clear the top of the assembly with the plate
on, and everything jams. Some of the metal plate is scraped away, so I
assume it has been an issue with the machine in the past.

I figure there is a proper way to adjust the height of that bobbin
assembly. Anyone know what it is?
