[Balloon-makers] Lessons In An Experimental

Sometimes we hear things that aren't quite true so here's a question i'd like to throw out - assuming no money exchanges hands, is it legal to receive instruction in an experimental balloon? Recently a friend took his check ride and the examiner crossed out stuff in his log book saying it couldn't be included as intruction took palce in an experimental balloon. 
 
But then i've heard it's perfectly fine. Just wondering.......................
